SOUTHERN COUNTIES U16 (90 OR LATER) WATER POLO CHAMPIONSHIPS

Sunday 16TH October 2005               GOLDSMITH’S POOL CROWBOROUGH

Sussex hosted an excellent Junior Southern Counties Water Polo Tournament at the deep water pool at Crowborough on a dry Sunday afternoon in October

It is very pleasing to report that the tournament was a huge success due to:

·          the pool was deep at both ends

·          Six of the 8 Southern Counties turned up for the Competition (Berkshire declined and Hertfordshire withdrew 7 days before the event)

·          the tournament started on time and finished on time

·          Worthing provided an electronic timing system recording the time, goals scored by each team, the period and the time for excluded players.

·          The Team Managers and the Coaches who organised their teams to be in the water at the right time.

·          Eileen Waller and Sue Chambers who filled in all 13 Match Sheets so efficiently

The Draw was made at 1.45pm and a round robin tournament was played with each County playing 5 matches.

The Tournament Director was not present due to his School Rugby commitments and Dave Waller ran the tournament. A protest was submitted by Trevor Hyde for Middlesex that they would only play the Tournament under protest because Kent and Sussex had 89 players in their team.

As Tournament Director, I personally take full responsibility for the error – it was a genuine mistake.

At the September 1st Meeting I brought up the matter of which age groups and came away that it was the 89 Group. No one at the meeting objected to this. The subsequent minutes clearly show 90 was agreed.

When I received the 5 team sheets (Surrey had declined to produce one despite three requests), only Essex had produced dates of birth. I informed Dave Waller that Essex believed it to be 90 and he rang Alf Jordan on the Saturday and he confirmed 89. On Wednesday, Hampshire produced their entry form which clearly stated 90. Finally the programme was sent by e-mail Friday evening and no one picked up the error.

RECOMMENDATION

1.        Sussex and Kent are disqualified.

2.        Surrey are the winners and Middlesex the Runners Up.

3.        In the new Regions, we get on with developing water polo

I again apologise for the genuine mistake.

Roger Edmondson.
